Little Mix have reflected on how their LM5 era didn’t get the flowers it deserved because it was overshadowed by the record label conflicts with Simon Cowell‘s folks at Syco.
In November 2018, the band’s management firm cut all ties with Syco, meaning acts like Little Mix and Rak-Su had to be shunted elsewhere.
The girls were hastily moved within Sony to a different imprint – RCA – but the era had decidedly less fanfare than the Glory Days one that came before it, or indeed the Confetti one that came after it.
Now, in their first big magazine cover and interview as a trio, they mentioned the furore as part of a discussion on all they’ve gone through over the last decade(!).
“Leaving our label was a massive step for us,” Leigh-Anne Pinnock told Glamour.
“But because LM5 was around that time, it didn’t get the recognition it deserved.
“With everything that happened, it was tarnished a bit and we always look back on that – especially me and Jade [they co-wrote a load of the songs] – and think it’s so annoying because we worked so fricking hard on it!
“But you have to think, ‘You know what, we all stood our ground, and we made that movement for a reason!’”
LM5 spawned only two singles – Woman Like Me and Think About Us – though Wasabi became a TikTok sensation last year, and songs like Strip and More Than Words also got their own music videos (Forget You Not was RIGHT THERE, but never mind). The album was recently certified Platinum.
Now, the Confetti era is continuing to deliver: Sweet Melody became their first No1 in four-and-a-bit years and also their longest-reigning Top 10 hit ever; and the album has spent a comfortable 16 weeks in the Top 40.
That’s already at least one more than LM5’s 15.
