Olivia Rodrigo gunning for impressive No1 debut

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series star Olivia Rodrigo could debut at No1 on the UK singles chart on Friday. Vanessa Hudgens could never!

If you’ve still not heard of the Californian 17-year-old, it might be time to get familiar: her new track Drivers License is part of a three-way tussle for the top of the country’s best-seller list; and was approx 650 sales behind the incumbent chart-topper, Little Mix’s Sweet Melody, in yesterday’s midweek update.

Music Week reports that Ed Sheeran’s Afterglow also continues to be a threat: it is just over 100 sales behind Rodrigo, currently in third place.

Worth pointing out, though, that this is another veeeeeery low sales week: at the halfway stage, no song has passed 12,000 units (though it’s also worth pointing out that Sunday data from Spotify and YouTube has not yet been added on – data which will perhaps favour Rodrigo).

Drivers License has had a loooot of momentum since dropping last Friday: with Rodrigo a vocal Taylor Swift fan, the song has had endorsement from Swift herself, and already has a mammoth 18.4 million Spotify streams worldwide.

I’ve sneakily added it to the Electric Angels rolling 2021 playlist, alongside other new stuff from the likes of Zara Larsson, Zayn and Arlissa.
