100 songs of the decade: Waking Up Slow – Gabrielle Aplin

100 songs of the decade: Waking Up Slow – Gabrielle Aplin

Written by: Gabrielle Aplin and Peter Rycroft
Produced by: Lostboy
Album: Avalon EP
UK release: August 2017
UK chart peak:

Gabrielle Aplin‘s John Lewis-assisted trip to the big time was decent enough – I liked Salvation especially – but I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with anything of hers quite as spectacularly as I did with Waking Up Slow.

A dreamy, outright-pop moment that marries her featherweight vocals with glistening, uplifting production; it’s much less… twee than I might have expected?? It really alerted me to Gabrielle’s potential as a strong Force For Good in pop; and although nothing she’s put out since has quite matched this, she’s so much better and bolder in this arena than she was when she was releasing acoustic albums with titles like English Rain.

  • I’ll be writing about my favourite 100 pop songs of the decade; one a day for the last 100 days of 2019. They’re in no particular order, except the Top 10 – which will (obviously) come in late December.
