I’m extremely late with this (last?) weekend’s New Music update, APOLOGIES, but there isn’t a great deal to get excited about.
As ever, follow the rolling playlist on Spotify here. Only three songs being added this week, and they are:
All Of The Feelings – Kiesza
Remember Kiesza?! I wasn’t too hot on her initial big hits like Hideaway, but she’s been quietly excellent ever since – and this is a huge, amazing pop song with a properly butterfly-inducing chorus. It’s already had more Spotify streams than any of the other tracks she’s released so far in 2020, so hopefully she’s on the ascent again.
Daydream – The Aces
It’s already been over a year since The Aces brought out their excellent debut album, When My Heart Felt Volcanic, and it’ll be three years soon since the release of their best song to date, Baby Who. Daydream makes me very, very excited for this next era: it feels a bit… peppier(?) than what we’ve heard from them before, and in the words of Treyc Cohen, I’m ready.
I Love Me – Demi Lovato
This isn’t a bad song by any means but really, this is a bit of a disappointment for me. The lyrics have some really good moments (“Jedi-level sabotage”, “Mine’s the only heart I’m gonna have for life”), but I Love Me re-treads very, very well-covered territory in pop, and I’m not convinced it does it excitingly enough; especially as it flits so chaotically between understated toe-tapping and soaring bombast. It’s got just enough good ideas to warrant a place on the playlist (I haven’t given the new Katy Perry ballad the same luxury!) but honestly I’m unsure how often I’ll return to this, and normally I replay Demi singles A LOT.
