One of the gayest songs of all time is Number 1 in the UK

After an incredible week of memes, clapbacks and headlines – all driven by a truly brilliant song and music video – Lil Nas X has debuted at Number 1 on the Official UK Singles Chart with the unapologetically queer Montero (Call Me By Your Name).

It’s iconic. It’s legendary. It’s BIBLICAL.

Yes, after being No11 on Monday’s half-way-point update, it seems the track continued to have massive sales and streaming success in this country over the last few days; and manages to pole-dance all the way to the top – knocking Nathan Evans‘ Wellerman down to No2.

According to the Official Charts Company, Montero logged 6.8 million streams across the week; of which 2.5 million were for the much-discussed video.

This is, of course, his second chart-topper in this country; after Old Town Road hit the summit in 2019. And it’s his fourth Top 40 hit overall: the other two were Panini (No21) and Holiday (No23).

His debut album, also called Montero, is due this summer. See this week’s full Top 100 here.

Meanwhile, Sarah Harding impacts the UK sales-only listings with Wear It Like A Crown, new at No33. Ella Henderson and Tom Grennan are No1 on that metric, with Let’s Go Home Together.
