I have often made it clear that I believe Same Old Brand New You to be the best boyband single in living memory, but it’s not the only classic in the A1 catalogue: Caught In The Middle, the lead single from their third album Make It Good, is turn-of-the-century midtempo angstpop at its best.
Charting at No2 upon its release in January 2002, it was the band’s eighth and final Top 10 hit, and ushered in a slightly more pop-rocky sound than fans might have been used to. You can thank producer Mike Hedges for that: having previously worked with the likes of Travis, U2, Texas, The Beautiful South and the Manic Street Preachers, here he gives some of that rEaL mUsIc energy to A1, without sacrificing their inherently pop roots.
Written by Ben and Paul from the band alongside Chris Porter and Rick Mitra, Caught In The Middle is the lads’ second most-streamed song on Spotify (14 million, bested only by Like A Rose), and it has 4.5 million video spins on YouTube.
