Introduced to the world as track eight on Britney Spears‘ third studio album, 2001’s Britney, this energetic kiss-off was written by the icon herself alongside blockbuster hitmakers Max Martin and Rami Yacoub, who also produced it.
Anchored by a delicious distorted staccato riff, it sees Brit as a fairy tale-averse girl who can’t be arsed to pursue a Happy Ever After with her outgoing Prince Charming. It also, pleasingly, includes a spoken middle-8 that ends with the phrase “I won’t return to thee.”
Cinderella currently has 6.1 million streams on Spotify, the most for any non-single from this particular era. Were we robbed of a video with lavish period costume and peak Britney choreography? You’re damn right we were.
