There’s a lot of love for Britney Spears following the release of the documentary about her rise to fame and conservatorship late last week.
Framing Britney Spears came out in the US on Friday, and – although it is infuriating and upsetting seeing the horrendous treatment she’s had being laid bare – the plus side is that more people than ever before are aware of what she’s been up against.
Kacey Musgraves is among those who have spoken out, saying on Instagram: “Everyone should watch the NY Times documentary on @britneyspears that just came out.
“Never has one person been so used and abandoned by ever facet around her.
“My heart goes out to her. She has always been such an inspiration to me my whole kid/teen life. Wish she could get a re-do.”
She added on Twitter: “Y’all..it’s plaguing me that nobody knows if @britneyspears is truly okay. Really hoping that if she isn’t she can formally vocalize it in some way and that she knows all of us on the outside really give a shit about her well-being.”
Garbage also joined in via Twitter, saying: “Just watched the “Framing Britney Spears” documentary and have to say, there is something VERY weird, very wrong going on. #FreeBritney.”
Olly Alexander tweeted: “I love @britneyspears”, and Best Coast summed up my feelings by saying: “I’d love to beat the shit out of this paparazzi guy in the Britney Spears doc.”
Hayley Williams wrote: “the Framing Britney Spears doc holy fuck [sic].
“no artist today would have to endure the literal torture that media/society/utter misogynists inflicted upon her.
“the mental health awareness conversation, culturally, could never be where it is without the awful price she has paid.”
Sam Smith shared the tweet.
Elsewhere, people like Sarah Jessica Parker, Bette Midler and Meghan McCain have been tweeting “Free Britney”, and Miley Cyrus put out a shout-out during her Super Bowl gig last night.
From the world of Drag Race, Priyanka has tweeted #FreeBritney, and Shea Coloueé has called the whole thing “absolutely infuriating”, pointing out that “it wouldn’t have happened to Britney if she were a man”.
There’s currently no official UK release date for the doc.
