Drag Race UK: Ginny Lemon explains incredible exit – ‘I’m not a competitor, I’m an icon’

Obviously, beware spoilers for Drag Race UK ahead, if you haven’t seen this week’s episode (not that the headline doesn’t literally tell you everything, but whatever).

Ginny Lemon has spoken out on their jaw-dropping exit – departing the stage in the midst of a lipsync against Sister Sister. I cannot stop thinking about it.

Reports had reached the tabloids ahead of the new season’s launch that, at some point during the run, one queen had ‘stormed out’ after refusing to do the final performance; and though I know some people already knew which queen it was, I had great fun/nervous adrenaline over the first few episodes trying to figure out who and when it was going to be.

Last night, we finally found out – and in an interview with broadcasters BBC Three, Ginny said: “I did it for so many reasons. I think it’s even hard to explain what was going through my head at the time.”

Recalling their devastation over past eliminations, they added: “I did not want to compete with my sisters. It made me dreadfully sad anytime anybody went home.”

Winning, it seems, was never on the wishlist: “I went there to break the binary, I went there to be myself, I did not go there to win a competition.

“I was having a fabulous time and I was challenged to do lots of things but ultimately I’m not a competitor, I’m an icon.

“I went on that show to do my own thing and that’s exactly what I’ve done. So I’m very smug with myself right now.”

Ginny would, they say, have done Cilla Black at Snatch Game if they had made it that far.

Next week – RuPaul does Eurovision!
