Playlisted 2020, week 22: All the great new stuff you missed while listening to Chromatica

Amongst all the (deserved!!) excitement over Chromatica, pretty much anything else that came out this week has been truly overshadowed – but don’t miss out on this lot of gr8 new singles.

As ever, it’s all been added to the rolling 2020 playlist here.

Melanie C – Blame It On Me: Melanie continues her dancefloor-friendly streak with this cracking little bop; with steely, done-with-this-shit lyrics and a laser-focussed vocal. It’s an addictive little tune, and it’s really been fighting Chromatica for my earspace this weekend. She’s still delivering!

Dolly Parton – When Life Is Good Again: Why did I nearly cry when I heard this on Thursday night please? Dolly’s long been angelic (she sent $1m to the fight against COVID-19 in April, and was a great sport in this week’s Drag Race finale), and in this song it’s even more apparent. Her fragile delivery? Those sweet lyrics? The gentle production? Ugh!!! Hold me!!

Baby Queen – Internet Religion: Here we have the debut single from a brand new artiste, first heard by moi on the PopJustice NMF playlist. It’s hard to make this kind of song (‘isn’t it weird how different we are online?!?!’) remotely tolerable, but BQ does a smashing job by simply making it an undeniable, energetic earworm.

Jordin Sparks – Unknown: Look who’s back! Jordin – 13 years on from her breakthrough and 5 since her last album – returns with a relatively pared-back track about wading through tough times with a Special Someone (oh wait, is it God? Maybe it’s God). It’s great to hear that voice again.

Four of Diamonds feat. Mr Eazi – The Writer: It’s been a couple of years now since Four of Diamonds started releasing music, and nearly four since they appeared on The X Factor. I’ll be honest, my excitement over their potential waned fairly speedily, but The Writer is their best in a while: big, sunny-weather-friendly production and playlist-ready hooks. Perhaps this’ll regain them a nice bit of momentum.
