People are campaigning to save Britain’s Got More Talent

Yes, of all television shows on this planet, people are currently fighting to save Britain’s Got More Talent – the ITV2 spin-off for Britain’s Got Talent – from its heavily-rumoured cancellation.

The Stephen Mulhern-fronted programme has been going for 12 years but is apparently being dumped so that the ~bonus content~ around BGT can be more heavily focussed online.

Makes sense, given newer viewing habits, although can ITV2 really find a better-rated alternative for the post-BGT, Saturday night timeslot?

Anyway, #SaveBGMT is trending today, which is unlikely to make any difference but there is something to be said about bosses targeting social media for its future BGT output and social media replying “no, actually, leave things as they are”.

A spokesperson is quoted as telling The Sun: “As our 18-34 audience share continues to grow and viewing habits are changing, naturally we are listening to viewers and focusing more on digital platforms.”

It is wild that BGT has managed to stay relatively drama-free (compared to similar shows, at least) and held its steady-ish ratings for so long. It’s back for its 14th season in 2020.
