Spider-Man: Far From Home’s huge success at the box office has seemingly resulted in Tom Holland’s Peter Parker leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Sony and Marvel (via Disney) had been sharing the rights to his web-slinging adventures for the last few years; enabling him to join in the MCU fun and – crucially!! – allowing Marisa Tomei to be part of the world’s biggest movie franchise. WE WERE SO BLESSED AND WE DIDN’T EVEN APPRECIATE IT!
Alas, Sony and Disney’s failed attempts to broker a new deal mean – according to Deadline – that Spidey will no longer be under the Marvel Studios umbrella, and he will once again be Sony’s alone unless some last-minute agreement can be reached (according to these reports, that possibility is remote).
This might go some way to explaining why there was no Spider-Man movie announced for Phase Whatevernumberitisnow at San Diego Comic-Con last month, huh. Two more Spider-Man films are in the works with Tom Holland still attached, but it seems they will not exist in the same world as aaaaall your Avenging faves.
Do you think all this stress has made Kevin Feige… take his hat off? I can just see him sitting in his office, taking that hat off, and… sighing. Sighing a long sigh. Muttering “goddamn it” under his breath. Then mopping his brow with a $10 bill.
Oh, incidentally – today is Andrew Garfield’s birthday. The Andrew Garfield who was dumped from the role before the Holland reboot when the Sony x MCU ~collab~ was first formed.
