100 songs of the decade: Make Me Feel – Janelle Monáe

Produced by: Mattman & Robin
Album: Dirty Computer
UK release: February 2018
UK chart peak: 74

It’s rare that you hear a song and know from the very first listen that it’s absolutely perfect. It’s even rarer when it’s an artist you’re really rooting for: Janelle Monàe is an extremely multi-talented individual, and she’s been consistently fantastic throughout the decade, so it was SO exciting when she came out with this Prince-esque marvel.

Make Me Feel is a masterclass in bouncy queer funk-pop; sensual, slick and empoweringly sexual. You also get the whole package with Janelle: not only is the song a 10 – so is the music video, and each and every performance. Seeing this live on her tour earlier this year was a real moment.

  • I’ll be writing about my favourite 100 pop songs of the decade; one a day for the last 100 days of 2019. They’re in no particular order, except the Top 10 – which will (obviously) come in late December.
