100 songs of the decade: Losing You – Solange

100 songs of the decade: Losing You – Solange

Written by: Solange Knowles and Dev Hynes
Produced by: Blood Orange and Kevin Barnes
Album: True
UK release: October 2012
UK chart peak: –

Dreamy vocals, house-like beats, 80s pop/R&B-style melodies… Losing You feels as fresh now as it did seven years ago. In fact, scrap that, it sounds even better. And it might be my all-time favourite Solange song.

Incidentally, this was when Dev Hynes was really hitting his stride with Blood Orange: in the space of a few years, on top of working on Solange’s True EP, he was also helping out with gorgey stuff from Mutya Keisha Siobhan, Tinashe, Jessie Ware, Sky Ferreira and Carly Rae Jepsen. What a roster!

Oh, and the music video for Losing You needs a shout-out. Cape Town plays host to a relaxed Solange divvying up look after look after playful look, and the way it offsets the sadness of the lyrics just enhances the track in a way that any good video should.

  • I’ll be writing about my favourite 100 pop songs of the decade; one a day for the last 100 days of 2019. They’re in no particular order, except the Top 10 – which will (obviously) come in late December.
